ISSUE #3 PAGE 15 Download: Part 3 or Whole Story
Save Paper: Small-Type Whole Story

NOTE TO ARTIST: The next several pages will resemble the opening scenes -- style-wise -- of issue #1...

PANEL ONE:

Close on the Phantom Kid.

REG CAPTION 1: Well, I can't say what I did was smart, my last two math tests will testify to that. I also can't say someone like The Conductor would've done it the same...

REG CAPTION 2: But I made a difference here in Railway City.

TWO:

It's Reg's mom, shot should be similar to the one of her in issue one, with pics of Reg and the family around. She's sitting holding a newspaper (maybe she should look as if she just looked up from it for a moment, towards the reader)

MRS. REYNOLDS: I'm not sure what possesses a mother to send her child out to a big city like the Railway...

MRS. REYNOLDS 2: ...But I can see that boy is really making a big to-do of it out there.

THREE:

Close on newspaper w/action shot of PK running off onto a fast-moving train, his former hostage is being helped out of a cruddy old suitcase (in which he was apparently stuffed) by two cops...

The shot looks like it was taken by a person who just happened to be there at the right time...

headline reads as follows:

PHANTOM KID MAKES MUERTÉS DISAPPEAR

Smaller, beneath headline: NEW PICTURES & INFO SHOW FIRST STEPS (page 4)

MRS. REYNOLDS: But coming from a small town myself, and maybe it's my generation, I wish he would get to know the people...And I'm not sure about that new costume.

PAGE 16

PANEL ONE: Angle on one of the people who witnessed PK capture the Muerté from a few pages back.

RAILWAY CITIZEN #1: It was dope. I'm headin' to school, scenic route, t' meet couple o' my homies..

RAILWAY CITIZEN #1 2: An' PK comes flyin' in, no foolin', an' just lays the smackdown on that boy!...

TWO:

Angle on PK, looking more like Batman than the Phantom Kid, swooping towards gang member in street.

RAILWAY CITIZEN #1 CAPTION: It was t-i-ight !

THREE: 2/4 of page...

Instead of PK accidentally knocking into the gang kid, he is standing triumphantly over him...the Muerté secured amongst ropes, gadgets, and eerie smoke. Our citizen is in the background.

FOUR:

Another "man-on-the-street" -- this one a businesswoman: plain, attractive but serious:

WOMAN: I can't really go into details, but we had reporters on the scenes of all the big captures...

FIVE:

The woman pulls, part-way, a video tape out of her bag.

WOMAN: Emmy-winning stuff. Right here.

WOMAN 2: I have to say, I don't believe even heroes like The Conductor or Maximum Man have ever pulled off something this big.

PAGE 17

ONE:

It's PK.

PK: Detective Lopez. He's the one that helped me...but it didn't start because of his help...

TWO:

It's the Muerté PK & Crain had captive.

MUERTÉ: Naw, I didn't say nothin'...

MUERTÉ: But you don't know The Kid...He knows what thoughts I got. Yeah. You know? He read my mind, how can you stop him?! He's got powers, man! That's how it hap'n, I swear.

THREE:

Big panel, rest of page... Down the center, splitting the large panel into two halves are small close-ups of the gang member's face. It's shots of him reeling from the torture of The Dixie Chicks CD. His eyes tearing in one, his face contorted into a scream in another (the headset visible over his ears w/more pretty musical notes)...

On the left of the big panel:

It's the Muerté hangout...outside a high window, you can see the Phantom Kid swinging towards it.

On the right of the big panel:

PK is perched, awkwardly, like he almost fell after crashing in (he's NOT Batman), in a corner -- window smashed. Police have come in through some large doors (a newsman with a professional video camera should be visible in the back somewhere)

PAGE 18

PANEL ONE:

It's PK again.

PK: Yeah, we crashed their little hideaway or whatever, but, let's face it, that's not going to stop a gang...

PK 2: Drugs and assault weapons and all that stuff. Well, Daryl, the "friend" I made in the gang, he told us a lot of stuff...

TWO:

It's The Conductor. Railway City's pride & superheroic joy...

CONDUCTOR: I found out the police knew of their weapons storehouse. I had expected that the Muertés reason for hiding was to gear up for a war...

THREE:

BIG action shot of The Conductor kicking some major butt in a warehouse where the gang has stored weapons. He's deflecting bullets, knocking out Muertés and destroying weaponry all in one, big, superheroic moment... police and a news van are possibly seen approaching through a window or opening in the wall.

THE CONDUCTOR CAPTION: ...So I charged in there full steam ahead and laid these Muertés to waste...

THE CONDUCTOR CAPTION 2: They crossed tracks with the wrong city!

PAGE 19

ONE:

PK is pulling at his mask, like he's about to remove it.

PK: But the problem doesn't begin with kids hanging out in an abandoned building...

PK 2: And it doesn't start at some phony exporter who's holding weapons...

TWO:

It's Lopez...

LOPEZ: The Phantom Kid gave us two things: first, where the Muertés were hiding (alowing us to, hm, match forensic evidence from a young woman's murder to several members)...and, second, and that they had a storehouse of weaponry.

LOPEZ 2: We worked with other departments and various arms of law enforcement, but, hmm, really it was me and a small taskforce who used some tried and true methods to get details on...where it was all coming from...and going to.

THREE:

Long, thin panel across page...in left-side foreground we can see someone holding a Dixie Chicks CD (close on their hands and the CD)...in mid-background along rest of panel we see one Detective casually lighting a cigarette while Lopez holds the headphones (SFX: [more musical symbols here]) on the head of a hand-cuffed (and screaming) gang member in this interrogation room.

FOUR:

Large panel, rest of page...

It's a bust at a pier...the Coast Guard's got a spotlight aimed at a boat from where crates of weapons were apparently being unloaded. On the dock, Lope has cuffed one guy, and a detective casually lighting a cigarette (same guy as above) is using his free hand to hold some creep knelt down on the ground.

PAGE 20

PANEL ONE:

PK has just removed his mask...

PK: I'm of two sides, or minds (whatever), of the drug war thing...It's really bad that we're losin' this fight, but I can't say legalizing stuff is the right thing to do...

PK 2: I dunno. Maybe it's my upbringing...Or am I not allowed to have opinions now that I'm a "cape," doing this whole hero stuff?

PK 3: ...I think my concern, now, is just how easy it is for kids to get, like, lured into it all. I saw it first-hand. And it had me thinking.

TWO:

It's a silhouetted person, apparently hiding his identity.

GUY: I'm small potatoes -sniff-...I ain't the guy they want...so, um, when they found out I was -sniff- supplyin' the Muertés...I, heck, I told them everylittlething I know.

THREE:

Big action panel of huge police and DEA raid...some of the guys being captured are elder Muertés, a couple of others should look like businessmen, one guy should match the silhouetted fella above...Phantom Kid is blending into the background, only partially discernable in the shadows.

PAGE 21

ONE: Establishing shot...

CAPTION: Railway City's East Side School for Young Adults

TWO-FOUR: Reg, virtually healed from his beating by the Muertés, is walking down the hall...passing big jerk Gordon Breckerman, who, as he passes, casually knocks Reg's books out from under his arm...

GORDO: Wohh! Oops! Oh, I apol-o-gize! Stupid of me!

FIVE:

Reg is picking up his books...

REG (quiet): Jerk.

SIX:

He's heading out the door of the building, onto the campus.

PAGE 22

Three average-sized panels across top of page...panel four takes up rest of page...

ONE:

Walking across campus, Reg is beckoned by Crain who is catching up in the background...

CRAIN: Hey! Reg, hold up!

TWO:

CRAIN: So, you jumping into the fray tonight?

REG: Yeah...It's taken me a while to get up my nerve...

THREE:

CRAIN: Why?...I mean, like--

CRAIN 2 (whispering): --you ran The Muertés out of town!

REG: But, I realized, anyone coulda' done that...I just, I dunno, happened to be there...Yeah, I was looking at the big picture...

REG 2: ...but it's not about that.

FOUR:

LARGE panel taking up ¾ of page:

REG CAPTION 1: ...No, Phantom Kid ain't some big hero. I'm just lucky enough to have myself a gift...

REG CAPTION 2: And, well, honestly, it's time I start using it correctly...

The shot is of Phantom Kid at a doorway in a somewhat run-down apartment building...The door is open and a 9 year old boy, looking up at PK, and his mom stand there; the mother in tears but smiling at PK.

PK: I just wanted to be sure everything was okay...I, uh, kinda took off quickly when I brought him home that night and, um...

MOTHER: He ran off because of a report card... His-- his best friend's parents aren't as...as understanding.

PK: Oh...I get it. I'm glad I, uh, you know...

SMALL INSET AT BOTTOM CORNER OF PAGE:

The mom has a caring hand on his face, giving the Phantom Kid a peck on his masked cheek...

MOTHER: Thank You, Phantom Kid.

REG CAPTION 3: The town -- and mom -- would be proud of me now.
