HAT

FULL PAGE: It's the biggest hero of Railway City -- of ANY city. No, not The Conductor...

A fireman...a few firemen (And, hey, for all you naysayers: this baby was written before they proved it in NYC at the World Trade!). They've turned the hose on the Muertés, throwing them back in a virtual typhoon of water from a firehose.

FIREMAN: ...We've gotch'yer back, Kid.

PAGE 18

PANEL ONE:

As two gang members fly by in a stream of water, the gang leader watches with a raised eyebrow.

PANEL TWO:

Quick as a cat, the leader draws his gun (maybe even spins 90º towards the reader/stream of water) -- he's gunnin' for the firemen.

PANEL THREE:

An empty (glass) soda bottle, thrown hard from O.P., hits the gun out of the leader's hand!

FOUR:

Angle on PK, hurt badly, amongst garbage cans and other garbage, including the fallen gang members (and pools of water...everything is dripping wet) around him; some Muertés are pulling themselves back up...

PK: Thanks for the...assist...guys.

FIVE:

Fireman: Stay put. We'll finish the job. Then help you out.

PAGE 19

PANEL ONE-TWO:

They turn the water back on, sweeping the remaining members, and the leader, as far back as possible.

PANEL THREE:

They turn off the hose as they look back towards PK.

FIREMAN: All right, Phantom Kid, we're gonn--

FOUR:

PK's struggling up the building, pulling himself over a ledge.

FIVE:

FIREMAN: Why that crazy...

FIREMAN #2 (with a smirk): We can turn the hose on him.

FIREMAN: Quiet, Tommy.

PANEL 6:

Close on the fireman still looking up at PK on the building. His expression reads pride & worry.

PAGE 20

Somewhere on this page, on a building or in Lopez's car, it should show the time to be just after 11.

The page is separated as 3 rows: across top is three panels, middle has 2 panels, bottom 2...

Sirens

PANEL ONE:

Lopez sits in his car on a city street...lights flash behind him -- he's at a crime scene.
He's looking solemn...like he's had enough hopelessness.

PANEL TWO:

A uniformed officer knocks on the window, Lopez is at attention.

SFX: RAP, RAP!

OFFICER: Lopez! Comin'?

LOPEZ: (small grumbly cloud, like he's cursing to himself)

PANEL THREE:

The officer still stands there.

LOPEZ: Yeah!...Yeah, I'll be right out. Mm.

FOUR:

Two uniformed men stand looking at something on a wall (maybe angle from the wall is the reader's POV?). Lopez is approaching in the background.

COP #1: ...Yeah, it is the eeriest thing.

COP #2: Someone said she's someone special or something?

FIVE:

Lopez is closer now.

COP #1: She did something to th--

LOPEZ: No. She didn't do anything.

LOPEZ 2: She was just someone they chose...

PANEL 6:

LOPEZ: ...And that the Phantom Kid thought he was saving. Mm. The news posits she may have been the first he saved. But she was actually a recruit.

LOPEZ 2: ...

LOPEZ 3: For the love of God, where's the crime scene unit?

PANEL 7:

We see now what they were looking at: a woman has been hung up, back against a wall...it is the young woman from issue one, who PK carried over his shoulder...She is chained up, dark in shadows...nothing can be made out save for the fact that she has long hair and is hanging limply.

Spray paint on the wall reads, "The War is On...the Kid beware!" The Muerté symbol is on the wall as well, as a clear signature to the message.

LOPEZ: Retribution. This is possibly the most ghastly... [the words trail off]

COP #1: He's makin' friends fast, hm, Lope?

PAGE 21

PANEL ONE:

Crain is up reading with his book light.

PANEL TWO:

Crain moves his book to glance at the time: 11:14pm

SFX: (small - from window in back) scrtch!

CRAIN (quietly): What was--?

PANEL THREE:

Crain looking over his shoulder to see an indiscernible figure just outside (it's PK of course).

CRAIN: Oh crud!...

FOUR:

Larger panel. Crain's holding the window open as PK tumbles in.

FIVE:

Crain's pulled off the mask.

REG: COUGH, Wheeze, COUGH-COUGH!!...HCH, HCH! COUGH!

CRAIN: Oh, Reg. Oh geez. Crud again.

FIVE:

LONG SHOT of room (it's okay if the 2 boys are particularly small here -- I want to show the quiet around them). The only light in the room is coming from the window and the little book light (laying upon the floor).

Crain's placed him against a wall. He's reaching for a pillow.

CRAIN: Sit up.

PAGE 22

PANEL ONE: It's clearly later on in the night...Angle on Reg and Crain, the latter patching up Reg. The t.v. on, Crain is swabbing iodine on Reg's shoulder -- a first-aid kit nearby.

CRAIN: ...Well, I was kind of a mother's boy as a kid. And--

REG: Naww...you?...*cough*...heh.

CRAIN: Quiet, Phantom Dork.

PANEL TWO:

CRAIN: And, uh, in this day camp I went to for, like, years, I'd volunteer as nurse's aid, because I had a big crush.

CRAIN 2: You should go to the hospital, but, uh, we can wait till you're, you know, comfortable.

REG: I messed up bad. I let down...*cough*... a whole lot of people who--

PANEL THREE:

CRAIN: Well, geez, Reg! You can't go out there in boots and a ridiculous stocking and think you're the scourge of the night! That was brilliant -- pfft!

REG: I was, uh...believing the hype.

FOUR:

CRAIN: You're totally out of your head!

REG: What-freakin'-ever! It's over.

CRAIN 2: Are you thick? Don't be a total--

FIVE:

Angle on t.v. It's the news.

ANCHOR: This just in...A woman was killed tonight, apparently as a warning to the city's new hero, Phantom Kid. It's believed the Muerté gang is behind th--

REG (O.P.): Mute it or something, okay Crain?

PANEL 6:

CRAIN: Oh, come on! That-- You can't let them get away-- I mean--

PANEL 7:

CRAIN: Here, you ever have a crush on a girl?

REG: ...Well, sure.

CRAIN 2: You'll do whatever's necessary to impress her, right? Act like a total fool in front of your friends.

REG 2: Yeah. I guess.

PANEL 8:

CRAIN: This city's your new girl. Impress her, Reg.

CRAIN 2: Remember? "A whole lot of people who were counting on you."

REG: I meant at home.

PANEL 9:

Favoring Reg. Crain should be just out of "camera" range. Reg is not looking sad any longer.

CRAIN: Phantom Kid, you are home!

REG: I... Okay. You're right.

REG 2: I'll show those guys -- I'll show everyone...
              Phantom Kid's not done yet!

CAPTION: To Be Continued (...Muertés beware!)...
