ONE: Shot of the ICL (Railway City's Intra-City Locomotive -- which has MUCH history behind it)...
The train, in the middle of the city somewhere, is heading underground. It's night. |
|---|
TWO:
Angle on train, in tunnel. Inside the yellow-lit car of the train, through a window, we see Reg.
REG CAPTION: The town sent me here -- the God-fearing local folk thinking I have a higher purpose.
THREE:
Reg is making marks on a map -- he's getting the lay of the land.
REG CAPTION: I dunno...Yeah, I'm a little faster, my reflexes even are a little faster than lots of people's...
REG CAPTION2: And, yeah, I'm gonna try and do this right...
FOUR:
Shot of Reg on top of an above-ground ICL station, sitting Indian style, making notes still
REG CAPTION: So I wasted no time getting to know this here city backwards & forwards...
![]() |
FIVE: Reg is looking across a river, still taking notes. REG CAPTION: And I'll use the costume mom made, even though I don't exactly love it... And I'll have a cool superhero name. And make a big splash in this city!! REG CAPTION: I'll be on top! |
![]() |
|---|
SIX:
Angle on Reggie's watch -- it's about 9:15pm.
REG CAPTION: Shoot, if I'm not back by nine-thirty, I'm in serious trouble.
PAGE 16
REG (thought balloon): Yeahhh...a cool superhero name...
REG CAPTION 2: I had lotsa high hopes in that first week.
PAGE 17
ONE:
Shot of newspaper, headline reads: PHANTOM KID RUNS AGAIN
TWO:
Angle on street, bird's eye view. Chalk outlines, ambulances, police cars, news vans, and reporters and crowds -- they're all there.
REG CAPTION: It was two days ago it happened. Twenty-two days since I came to Railway City, six days since I put on the costume (which I really gotta talk to my mom about).
REG CAPTION 2: I was not "just in time," the way a hero's supposed t' be.
REG CAPTION 3: Matter of fact I couldn't've been more late...
THREE:
Angle on Det. Emilio Lopez. Big guy. He's talking to another plain clothes Det. (just for the fun of it, let's make the other Tec look like Brisco from Law & Order)
LOPEZ: Well, we can't hold anyone. The dead boyfriend had priors up to his ears and the dead girl was under a restraining order.
LOPEZ: In theory they could have offed each other.
DETECTIVE: Couple of the year. But we can't prove the gang members actually did it?
LOPEZ: Until forensics gets a closer look, we've only one possible witness...
![]() |
FOUR: Lopez is looking at a notepad. LOPEZ: A new heroboy it seems. Black outfit, big boots, little silver belt buckle...wearing a red ski-mask with no eye or mouth slits. No cape. LOPEZ 2: He jumped down to help, disappeared as soon as he caught site of the trouble he was up against. DETECTIVE: Sounds like our "Phantom Kid" strikes again. |
|---|
PAGE 18
LOPEZ: Who?
DETECTIVE: The kid'ts been in the papers. Thought he was helpin' out...
Collage of a scene which begins with a long vertical panel similar to the story splash: the scene is of a gang doing some hazing...the girl PK carried up the fire escape (seen earlier) is present.
PAGE 19ONE:
Back to cops...
DETECTIVE: It was a hazing ritual. Nobody musta told him that things ain't always as easy as in those Spidey comics he grew up on.
DET 2: Someone caught it on camera--
LOPEZ: One of the kids?
DET 3: In the gang? Probably. Seems the kid took off with the "victim" -- who then turned on 'im.
DET 4: Tried to beat the holy heck outta the cape. Heh, poor kid.
TWO:
LOPEZ (small): It can't be an easy job.
DET: Hmn?
LOPEZ 2: What's your point?
THREE:
DET: I wouldn't expect him to come forward to help on this. He's not like the Big Guy.
LOPEZ: Mm. So the papers've been having a bit of fun with the new kid. And he's popped up in gang territory a lot, huh?
FOUR
DET: Yeah, but it's more like he's lost than trying to stop the gang. What're you thinkin' about doin', Lope?
LOPEZ: Purposeful or not, he wants to help, I can use the assist...
LOPEZ 2: ...I'm gonna give our Phantom Kid an ego boost.
PAGE 20
ONE:
CAPTION: Two Days Later
It's late. In the dorm, we see Reg and Crain in their beds (Reg's shiner should be almost gone). Crain is dutifully reading a good-sized book with a little book light; Reg uses a flashlight to see the paper.
Reg CAPTION: I've been holding onto this paper like a favorite teddy bear I had as a boy.
Reg CAPTION 2: The other day it was "Runs Again." Then a day after that, today, I'm a hero, according to the cops. I don't know if anyone else agrees.
CRAIN: I'm the second biggest wanker at school.
REG: What?... Now, why would you go and say a thing like that?
CRAIN 2: 'Cause I'm not the one laying in bed reading the freakin' newspaper.
TWO:
REG: Yeah, well, eat it!...Hey, what are you reading?
CRAIN: Heh...it ain't 'The Joy of Cooking.' Magazines're under the sack in the closet by the way.
REG 2: Yep...some fell out when you left the door open.
THREE:
Shot of Reg smiling. On this shot we can see the newspaper laying on his chest (a NY Post-type of paper), and the headline, which reads, COPS SAY P.K. OK!
PAGE 21
Reg is in class (this classroom should be a well-decorated, extremely clean and somewhat elegant room as is fitting for a private school), Gordo is shooting spitballs at Reg's ear throughout the scene.
ONE:
This panel is a thought balloon of a supercool Phantom Kid -- more "professional" looking, with an added cape, cool belt and a few other modifications.... The thought balloon that is this picture leads to the head of Reggie Reynolds in the next frame.
TWO:
Reg is doodling...we can see a bad sketch (he's NOT an artist) of the PK costume. He's also making a list of needed extras: a cape, utility belt, smoke pellets, infra-red binoculars, shield, grapling hook [yes, "grappling" is misspelled...that's how it should look on the page].
THREE:
Reg gets a spitball in the ear and winces.
FOUR:
Reg is adding narrow eye-slits to the mask -- he's overdoing it, making PK look like something from a bad Image comic of the early '90s...except that his drawing is completely awful.
FIVE:
Another spitball is shot.
SIX:
Reg is now writing the words "Phantom Kid" in different superhero-type fonts.
SEVEN:
Another spitball
EIGHT:
Gordo slyly passes a straw to his friend to help get Reg with spitballs.
NINE:
Gordo and his buddy, both with the straws at their mouths, are shooting.
SFX: fwhhoo! fwhhoo!
PAGE 22
ONE: Extreme close-up of Reg's ear...a much smaller "fwhhoo! fwhhoo!" in the background.
TWO: The two wads of paper hit a hand which speeds into view.
THREE: Shot of the two bullies laughing.
FOUR: Reg looks down at his hand -- at the spitballs he caught -- disgusted.
REG (thought balloon): I guess he didn't care much for my apology note.
FIVE: The bell rings.
SIX:
Gordo and his buddy (who I just might name some day) walk by.
BUDDY: What're you gonna do about it?
GORDO: He'll prob'ly have his mom call up and complain.
SEVEN:
Smaller panel...Reg's eyes are narrow -- he wants to hit Gordo.
REG CAPTION: I don't have powers, but I know I can hurt that boy.
PAGE 23
ONE: Large(-ish) panel. Still in classroom as boys shuffle out. Gordo's taken an exaggerated step forward towards Reg (the kind one does to goad an opponent or make him flinch), fist at the ready. Reg is standing tense and straight.
SFX (coming from foot at floor): STOMP!
GORDO: Yeah, what's your beef?!
TWO:
Close on Gordo as he's getting chastised from off-panel teacher.
TEACHER: Misss-ter Breckerman! What is the problem?
THREE:
Shot of Gordo and teacher -- Gordo's buddy ducking out in the background.
GORDO: Nothing, Professor Eiking.
EIKING: Reggie, why don't you take off. Gordon and I need to get something straight.
FOUR:
Reg in hallway, heading to another class.
REG CAPTION: Wonderful. Now this'll be my fault too. Gordo's really starting to get to me.
FIVE:
Reg takes a seat in his next classroom (let's make it science so it'll be visually different from the previous class).
REG CAPTION: A few more hours, then we get free time. I can run down the street, pick up some of the materials I need...
REG CAPTION 2: Shoot, where does someone get a cape from?
REG CAPTION 3: How do the other guys do this?
REG CAPTION 4: I think I'm beginning to see why my small town sent me out here...The hero stuff is all I can think about...
PAGE 24
Full Page shot. At top, across page, Reg leaning on his desk, obviously day-dreaming; this picture blends down into what is about 4/5 of the page: an action shot (street, running, jumping, a fight, a rescue -- whichever) of Phantom Kid in what will be the final version of his uniform.

CAPTION: NEXT: Reg's journey continues (by that I mean he gets whupped real good by some bad guys)...
