Hello!
Glad you're here! Why
Would You Want That? It's a good way to improve your skills as a
writer, plus, it's awfully hard to copy-edit your own work when you're
so close to it...another pair of eyes is always helpful.
Read on, but if you have questions, E-mail me at
Keith at PlanitReality.com
In this section I offer my editorial
services to folks wanting a professional
critique or copy-edit of their written work!
WHAT
I DO:
· I will edit grammar and punctuation.
· I will offer suggestions without trying to change your vision or style (an editor,
or teacher, who attempts to change your style is of no help, but one that helps
you establish that style....)
· My judgments will be based on what it is you are trying
to say, not what I think you should
say or how I personally would say it.
If you do not want a critique, but still need an editor to simply review your work for errors, the Fees section has more information.

KEITH PLANIT'S CREDENTIALS:
MTV
Networks: editor of a business-to-business website
for all Viacom cable networks (MTV, Nickelodeon, TV Land, VH1, TNN,
et. al.). I wrote and edited all copy on the site and rewrote many press releases,
business promotion copy, and numerous descriptions of t.v. shows.
DC Comics: I was assigned to the Vertigo Group (which produces titles for older comics readers) and had the opportunity to edit a variety of manuscripts by well-known comics writers; also reviewed submissions by new writers and copy-edited in DC's marketing department, working on their business-to-business publications.
NPO Online: here, I faced some new challenges. Prior to MTV, and long after DC, I worked as an editor for NPO, an e-commerce company. I faced the challenge of working with a fantastic artist who was being asked to write a weekly column on a subject she loved but about which she had no experience writing. As well, I edited reviews from "seasoned" critics whose review work was particularly muddled.
Young & Rubicam: as one of the managers in the proofreading department of a Y&R subsidiary -- an ad/marketing firm -- my team & I made numerous alterations to the then-in-use styleguide and often discussed common issues of grammar and punctuation. Although I personally prefer the AP Stylebook, we most often referenced Chicago Manual of Style at this company.
FEES:
I
ask for half up front (based on page count).
On
pieces under 15 pages, this amount is fully refundable if you are
not happy with my work. Beyond 15, well, sorry, but I could lose
the house if I work that way.
This
does not mean you should expect you will agree with my entire critique
-- I'm the editor, you're the artist, if we agreed 100% of the time, the
world would likely come to a halt. However, if you have learned nothing,
if you do not feel I understood your work, and if you feel I have been
unfair, a refund is certainly possible.
(pages
are expected to be double-spaced)
1-3
pages: $25 flat fee (includes phone calls if necessary)
4-10
pages: $10 per page
10+
pages: $15 per page
Additional fees: a flat fee of $12 an hour will be added to phone calls.
How do I figure my fees? Well, I did my best to make it fair for everyone. At one to three pages I need it to be worth my time; depending on the level of work, three pages can take two-three hours, including commentary. However, this service is really aimed at "writer hopefuls," and I do not want to bankrupt anyone who is seeking advice and tips on their shortest of short stories.
Beyond
that, I feel that other works may require re-reading, longer commentaries,
and more time to be spent on the piece. If you look around at other editor sites, you will see my fees are quite fair.
If you want me to solely look at grammar and such without a continuity check or critique, a fair fee will be negotiated.
